Nook Review

The Nook from Barnes & Nobel is a simple to use E reader. The menus are fairly intuitive, Turning pages in a book is just a click of a button located where your thumb naturally goes when holding an open book. Like a lot of e readers it is not backlit so that makes it easier to read then a LCD or CRT screen. It’s not like looking into a flashlight, so there is no eye strain.

To use the Nook there is a small LCD screen on the bottom gives you some simple menus. There are icons such as Daily for news papers, or magazines, Library for the books currently on file, shop to find new books. It only takes a few moments and some trial and error to figure it out. Much easier then a few mp3 players I’ve used.

The one draw back is that the tiny on screen keyboard is a bit troublesome. There is no stylus and the Nook does not detect finger nails, so you have to touch the tiny key pad with the pad of your finger tip. So there will be a lot of typos. But the only time you HAVE to use that key pad is setting up WPA for the wireless access, and entering the email address used for your Barnes & Noble account. Searching for books can be done on any computer, and the book can then be down loaded from the “my library” menu on the Nook itself.

There are other features that should be mentioned as well. You can up load music and image files. The music is not very loud but the sound is rather good. The music will play while you while you are reading a book. There is a separate folder for audio books.

The images have to be up loaded to either the wallpaper folder or the screen saver folder. The image will only be black and white and show when the Nook is asleep, or the main menu is up. A rather simple way to personalize your Nook.

The Nook does have a web browser. The browser does not handle flash content, but other wise works like every other web browser. I find it awkward to use, but if you need to find info online the option is there.

Don’t Open That Zip File. Another Fake UPS Email.

Okay this is clearly another attempt to get people to open a Trojan file. I have to laugh when ever I get one of these because I’ve spent a few years as a tech support agent and often had to warning people about these kinds of attacks.

A big give a way that this is a fake is the lack of information. This email is just a jpeg file and a zip file. The logo was stolen from the web site and the fake instructions were added to the same image file.

There is no 1-800 number included in the body of the message to call for more help. I know from past dealings with UPS that there is more info given in their emails. That always includes suggestions on how to contact some one for more information. I also know they do not send info in zip files.

But the biggest clue for me is the fact that this is the fifth time I have received some sort of fake email that had a zip file attached. It is the second one using UPS as the lure to open the Trojan file.

I say this every time; when in doubt, call the company that allegedly sent the email. Use Google or Bing to get to the really company’s web site and look for a customer support number. If there really is a problem they need you to fix, customer support can help you that way.

Recording phone calls

For reasons I won’t go into the need for being able to record a phone conversation came up. So I went looking for the easiest way to do this. Here are two cheap ways to record a phone call.

How-To Build a Telephone Recording Circuit from an Old Modem

Record phone calls to MP3 or WAV

There is software to record calls on cell phones, software for record calls on Skype. But of most of these seem to cost about $30 or more

You should check your local laws about the rules of record phone conversations. You can get into big trouble in some places for not getting consent to record.
