Arduino mega hexapod robot with LED display

Hexapod robot called SAMSA II is a next version of robot SAMSA platform which was based on Atmega128. This one has some nice improvements to do even more with this baby. Overall SAMSA II robot is equipped with three microcontrollers where one takes care of reading sensors, another controls LED dot matrix display and main Arduino mega is a brain.

Despite the fact that there is an arduino used, it is programmed with custom C++ code without usage of Arduino IDE what lead to more efficient code. It has some load actually because robot motion consists of 18 Dynamixel Ax-12 servo motors. As we mentioned additional features include 8×8 matrix LED display, IR remote control. Demo program gives several walking and 3D movement configurations.

Android + Arduino + ROS = Cloud Robotics

Another important announcement for the field of robotics was made at Google IO 2011 that complements the announcement for the Android Open Accessory Kit.

As shown in the video below about Cloud Robotics (this presentation is very interesting and explores somewhat involved robot programming), there is a new implementation of ROS, the popular operating system for robots, that runs directly on Android. Even PR2 was invited to the talk!

This means that any ROS compatible robot  (including Arduino-based robots) can be controlled via an Android phone, including the popular PR2. This interoperability and the power of cloud computing could provide robots, in the future, with better abilities especially when facing unexpected situations. With the power of the cloud, robots can offload complex computations and thus require less electrical power for computations. They could also learn new skills on the fly without needing to have all possible skills installed at once.

We are also happy to see that this technology is accessible to everyone through the use of Arduino and Open Hardware. RobotShop’s MyRobots.com initiative is compatible with this vision ans also aims to give robots, and robot owners, the power of the cloud though Open Hardware and Software.

Tricopter with Atmega8 flight controller

It is always cool to see flying stuff, especially when it is hand made and open source. This small tricopter design uses open source KapteinKUK flight controlled built around Atmega8 microcontroller. It is based on 3 HobbyCity HK401B gyros. This is a version 2 (here you can see build log of previous ones).


The body of tricopter is hand made what makes it even more unique. It wouldn’t be much fun if it hasn’t a camera. So enjoy great flight and stability of it.

I recently bought a molded reprap prusa mendel kit from Metrix create space. They are a hacker space in Seattle, Wa. The molded kits cost anywhere from a third to half of what a set of printed parts cost because they take far less time to produce.One downside of the printing method is that parts will end up sloppier and require some more post processing.

Leg-Wheel Hybrid Mobile Platform

A group led by Dr. Pei-Chun Lin, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University, has designed a mobile platform with wheels that convert to legs and back again. (see video) Found on Botropolis website.
