Discord has sort of been the go to social media Group Hangout. If you have a group of friends that are spread across the world, and you want to keep in contact? Or you to young/broke to drive. You just get a discord account invite people in and you can do everything; from run a very limited stream, do a let’s play, with real time voice chat, Share Memes, Youtube videos, links, or long winded rants on a private chat group. Discord has A lot of options, and really convenient. Something I’ve rather enjoyed. The experience made me feel sort of nostalgic for the old bulletin board days. That’s the best way to explain what having a Discord channel is like; It’s a very exclusive, very advanced bulletin board.
Discord is preparing to go public. It’s filed the paperwork for its initial public offering that would allow people to buy stock in their company. A business move that usually makes members of a small start up very very wealthy overnight. If it’s handled correctly. Discord was concerned about Public perception on safety for minors. Not entirely justified considering everything that happened with Roblox. In an attempt to at least appear like they’re taking accusations Child predators on the platform seriously, discord announced that they were going to require facial scans or an upload of an ID to prove someone was an adult. The users who don’t get a limited “teen” account. This announcement did not go over well with Discord’s user base. There was a spike in Discord alternatives get a jump in new accounts. Setting aside the security concerns for a moment, The fact that there are so many alternatives to discord tells me that Discord is not unique. It’s not a killer app. If all or most of the popular features are available elsewhere, and there had to have been something else about Discord that made it popular. AT the moment it’s not trust, considering only a few months ago they had a major security breach. So a company that already proven to not have insufficient security demanding their user base Provide sensitive information to prove who they are It is not exactly a good public image.
Suddenly creating teenager account that has limited access to features that have been readily available to anyone who’s had an account; has just driven away the teenagers. Clearly the biggest demographic of users on Discord. Showing that Discord doesn’t exactly understand its user base who its user base is specifically.
the whole thing really does feel more like security theater. It’s been tried other countries and it was not exactly successful. It just means that people are going to find a way to bypass it, Or just move on to the next new thing.
Anyone try a Discord alternate? anything worth a look? any one come up with a Facebook Alt?
